外国名著英文高中生读后感

Here I am sitting on a couch alone, thinking about what I have just finished reading with tears of sadness filling my eyes and fire of indignation filling my heart, which revived my exhausted soul that has already been covered by the cruelty and the selfishness of the secular world for a long time。 It is truly what I felt after reading Oliver Twist, written by the prominent British author Charles Dickens。

The resonance between me and the book makes me feel not only the kindness and the wickedness of all the characters in the novel, but what this aloof society lacks, and what I lack deep inside。 These supreme resources I’m talking about right now are somewhat different from minerals, oil that we usually mention。 They’re abstract like feelings, and some kinds of spiritual stimulation that all of us desire anxiously from one another —— love and care。

Those charitable figures whom Dickens created in the novel are really what we need in life。 They showed love and care to others, just as the gentle rain from the sky fell upon the earth, which was carved into my heart deeply。

Mr。 Brownlow is one such person。

The other day he had one of his elaborate watches stolen by two skilled teenage thieves, Artful Dodger and Charley Bates, and thought naturally it was Oliver, who was an orphan and forced to live with a gang of thieves, that had done it because he was the only one near by after the theft had taken place。 Being wrathful, he caught Oliver, and sent him to the police station where the ill-tempered, unfair magistrates worked。 Fortunately for him, Oliver was proved innocent by one onlooker afterwards。 With sympathy, Mr。 Brownlow took the injured, poor Oliver to his own home。 There Oliver lived freely and gleefully for some months as if he were Mr。 Brownlow’s own son。 One day, however, Mr。 Brownlow asked Oliver to return some books to the bookseller and to send some money for the new books that he had already collected。 The thief Oliver once stayed with kidnapped him。 After that he disappeared in Mr。 Brownlow’s life。 Searching for a while, Mr。 Brownlow had to believe the fact that he had

run away with his money。 But dramatically, they came across each other again a few years later。 Without hesitation, Mr。 Brownlow took Oliver home for the second time not caring if he had done something evil。

Perhaps most of us would feel confused about Mr。 Brownlow’s reaction。 But as a matter of fact, this is just the lesson we should learn from him。 Jesus said in the Bible。 “Forgive not seven times, but seventy-times seven。” Why is that? Because forgiveness is our ability to remove negative thoughts and neutralize them so our energy may be spent on doing what we came here for。 We cannot move forward in our future if past issues cloud our thinking。 Stop put Mr。 Brownlow into the list of your models。 Always give people a second chance no matter what they might have done。 That’s also a substantial part of loving and caring others。

Charles Dickens said:“Love makes the world go around。” These immortal words have inspired and will keep on inspiring us to chant the melody of love and to say the prayer of care forevermore。 Let us, therefore, enjoy life and treat other people lovingly。 These principles are the roots and foundations of beliefs supporting this article and our mission together。

The tale of two cities is a historical story, one of Dickens’ long fictions。The background to the novel is the revolution of France 。It portrayed a brutal and bloody story , but it also contained love and friendship。

In the novel, Dickens sarcastically described a typical cruel nobleman—marquis of Evermonde 。 When he was young he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family 。What’s worse , he used his power to imprison Dr Manette , a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes 。 In order to hide their crimes。 Marquis of Evermonde and his brother threw Doctor Manette into prison for 18 years 。 During these 18 years,Doctor Manette lost his freedom and suffer a great in spirit 。

I felt unthinkable that Marquis of Evermonde and his brother killed people just as easily as they killed chickens。 They deprived other people’s freedom as they liked and they thought it was normal and unremarkable。 They had never realized that they had done something wrong or something improper。 Because their nature was cruel and evil, like demons。 There is an old saying which means: People who mit too many crimes will kill themselves。 After all, there is justice in the world。 The demons can’t be rampant forever。 Because the world will not forgive them。 They will pay their lives for their crimes。 Let’s see the consequence of the Marquis,’’He lay there like a stone with a knife pushed into his heart。” I think it was just what he ought to gain and it is a real exciting scene。

The Marquis’ death was just the beginning of people’s resistance to the nobleman。 Gradually more and more people joined in the revolution。 One after another nobleman were sentenced to death and their heads were cut down 。 However, some innocent people were implicated in the revolution。 Charles Darney was one of them He was the nephew of Marquis of Evermonde。 To the opposite of his uncle, Darney was a kind and independent young man。

Dickens spoke highly of kindness mercy and love in the novel too。 This is the other thone of the novel when Doctor Manette was released from prison。 It was his daughter Lucie who took care of him and helped him return to normal。 During this time, Dr manette and Lucie knew Charles Darney and Sydeny Carton, the two young man fell in love with Lucie at the same time 。 At last, Lucie married Chares Darney 。Dr Manette accepted Darney as his son-in-law although he knew that Darney was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison for18 years。 This is the love between father and daughter。 And Sydeny Carton , the very great man ,loved Lucie deeply。 He promised Lucie that he would do everything for her happiness。 He did it truely ,he sacrificed himself instead of Darney who looked the same as him。 This is love for lovers 。 This is the most wonderful thing in the world。 It also reminds us that no matter how no matter when there is true love existing。 At the end , Lucie, Dr Manette and Darney arrived in England safely。

The tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions。 Its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of France。 The author made the experience of the fictional charactor Dr Manette as the main clue。The plots are plicated, and they are flexuous and dramatic。 The structure is plete and rigorous。

Dickens had dear love and hate。 He praised those who ought to be praised and attacked those who ought to be attacked。 The motivation of the novel maybe just warn the English dominators。 But I think we can learn something meaningful from the tale of two cities。

thoughts or reflections on reading wuthering heights

the book was written by emily bronte, it published in 1847。but at that time, it seemed to hold little promise, selling very poorly and receiving only a few mixed reviews。 i found this in our school library, i chose this book because the title attracted me。 the book is structured around two parallel love stories, the first half of the novel centering on the love between catherine and heathcliff, while the less dramatic second half features the developing love between young catherine and hareton。 in contrast to the first, the latter tale ends happily, restoring peace and order to wuthering heights and thrushcross grange。 in the story, the two houses, wuthering heights and thrushcross grange, represent opposing worlds and values。

i spent twenty days reading this book。 after reading this book, i felt for heathcliff at first。 heathcliff begins his life as a homeless orphan on the streets of liverpool, and then he tyrannized by hindley earnshaw。 but he bees a villain when he acquires power and returns to wuthering heights with money and the trappings of a gentleman。 his malevolence proves so great and long—lasting。 as he himself points out, his abuse of isabella—his wife is purely sadistic, as he amuses himself by seeing how much abuse she can take and still e cringing back for more。

catherine represents wild nature, in both her high, lively spirits and her occasional cruelty。 she loves heathcliff so intensely that she claims they are the same person。 however, her actions are driven in part by her social ambitions, which initially are awakened during her first stay at the lintons, and which eventually pel her to marry edgar。 catherine is free—spirited, beautiful, spoiled, and often arrogant, she is given to fits of temper, and she is torn between her both of the men who love her。 the location of her coffin symbolizes the conflict that tears apart her short life。 she is buried in a corner of the kirkyard。 in contrast to catherine, isabella linton—catherine’s sister—in—law represents culture and civilization, both in her refinement and in her weakness。 ultimately, she ruins her life by falling in love with heathcliff。 he never returns her feelings and treats her as a meretool in his quest for revenge on the linton family。

just as isabella linton serves as catherine’s foil, edgar linton serves as heathcliff’s。 edgar grows into a tender, constant, but cowardly man。 he is almost the ideal gentleman。 however, this full assortment of gentlemanly characteristics, along with his civilized virtues, proves useless in edgar’s clashes with his foil。 he sees his wife obviously in love with another man but unable to do anything to rectify the situation。 heathcliff, who gains power over his wife, sister , and daughter。

the whole story make people’s mood heavy。 fortunately, the end is happy。

the author emily bronte lived an eccentric, closely guarded life。 she was born in 1818, two years after charlotte—the author of jane eyre and a year and a half before her sister anne, who also became an author。 her father worked as a church rector, and her aunt, who raised the bronte children after their mother died, was deeply religious。 emily bronte did not take to her aunt’s christian fervor, the character of joseph, a caricature of an evangelical, may have been inspired by her aunt’s religiosity。 the brontes lived in haworth, a yorkshire village in the midst of the moors。 these wild, desolate expanses—later the setting of wuthering heights—made up the brontes daily environment, and emily lived among them her entire life。 she died in 1848, at the age of thirty。

i like this book because it rest on the unforgettable characters。 wuthering heights is based partly on the gothic tradition, a style of literature that featured supernatural encounters, crumbling ruins, moonless nights, and grotesque imagery, seeking to create effects of mystery and fear。 i would like to remend this book to other readers。

外国名著英文高中生读后感(精选篇4)

Recently I read a novel called A Tale of Two Cities。 The novel is based on the French Revolution。 It was 1775,both England and France were on the verge of Revolution 。England's king ,George Ⅲ,was having trouble with his American colonies 。And France 's king ,Louis, was too concerned with his own wealth to worry about his people 。

Therefore, neither king noticed the changes taking place in his country 。They didn't realize ,or care ,that the peasants were hungry and unhappy 。They never thought that anything was wrong with the way things were 。They were wealthy ,and they thought only of themselves。

But the peasants were tired of being treated unfairly。 They were tired of watching the kings waste money while their own children starved。 So, in both London and Paris, the lower classes prepared to revolt 。They were ready to force the kings to make a change。

Then one day in July of 1789, the Revolution began in France 。Armed peasants ran through the streets of Saint Antoine 。Their leader, Ernest Defarge continued to pass out weapons。 The men cheered and waved their weapons in the air 。Then, they marched toward the Bastille。

The novel also talks the story of two men, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton。, who look similar but are very different in personality。 Darnay is a romantic French aristocrat, his uncle is the Marquis St。

Evremonde。 The Marquis is infamous for his cruelty。 While is a cynical English barrister。 However, the two are in love with the same woman, Lucie Manette。

Charles Darnay is not cruel like his uncle has been。 When he knew his servant is in danger, he went to France at once to defend him。 He had promised his mother that he would help the peasants。 He had a hard time traveling through France。 When he finally reached Paris, he was taken prisoner。 In my point of view, Charles Darnay is innocent, he is not cruel。

The other one is Sydney Carton。

In my opinion, he is a wonderful man。 He once said,‘I am not worthy of your love, but I want you to know that I wish for your happiness。 I hope that we will able to remain close friends。 Miss Manette, I would give my life for you。 Never forget that, Lucie。’ Eventually, he was to die in Charles Darnay’s place。 Because Charles Darnay is Lucie’s husband, and they led a happy life。 In order to help Lucie live a enjoyable life, he was to die in Charles Darnay’s place。

From the novel 'A tale of two cities '。I learn much ,not only the Revolution in two different cities ,but also the deep relationship between people 。I'm impressed by Mr。 Manette's tough spirit ,never give in to difficulties 。Even though he had been imprisoned a long time ,he struggled to live。 He was also an upright man 。When his son -in -law was arrested by the Revolutionists, Dr。Manette strongly defended Charles Darnay ,hoped that the Revolutionists could release Charles Darnay 。

Lucie Manette gives me a deep impression 。At the beginning of the novel, I learn that her father had passed, but then,Mr。 Lorry told her that her father was still alive。 Because Lucie 's father was imprisoned for a long time 。Her mother begged the king to help her ,but he gave no reply 。She suffered terribly when her husband disappeared ,so she told her daughter that her father had died 。But she never stopped looking for Lucie's father 。The king was of no help ,and she never found even one clue 。Two years after his disappearance ,she died 。

I am deeply impressed by the other characters in the novel。

Mr。Lorry is also a good man ,at the first of the novel ,when he met Miss Lucie ,and told her that her father was still alive 。Besides ,he helped her

to find her father in Paris 。On the way to Paris ,they experienced many difficulties 。But Mr。Lorry didn't give up helping Miss Lucie and Lucie 's father 。As far as I concerned ,it not only show his hospitality but also show his hatred to the European royal。

In Paris, the Marquis St。 Evrémonde, Darnay's uncle, is returning from an audience with Monseigneur, one of the 'greatest lords in France', when his coach runs over and kills the son of the peasant Gaspard; he throws a coin to Gaspard to pensate him for his loss; in the assembled crowd is the implacable tricoteuse, Madame Defarge。 He throws the money back, enraging the Marquis and leading him to exclaim that he would willingly kill any of the peasants of France。

If I were a peasant at that time in England or France,I would join in the revolution with no hesitation 。All man are equal 。The king of country should concern his people whether they are starving or homeless 。We can learn much from history in our country or in other countries ,only when the leader of the country cares much about his people's life can the country be stronger 。People are the base of the country ,without people ,country can not be stronger and can not develop。

外国名著英文高中生读后感(精选篇5)

The author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in London。 The hero of this novel was Oliver Twist, an orphan, who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime。 He suffered enormous pain, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse。

While reading the tragic experiences of the little Oliver, I was shocked by his sufferings。 I felt for the poor boy, but at the same time I detested the evil Fagin and the brutal Bill。 To my relief, as was written in all the best stories, the goodness eventually conquered devil and Oliver lived a happy life in the end。

One of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft, little Oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of Mrs。 Maylie and Rose and began a new life。 He went for walks with them, or Rose read to him, and he worked hard at his lessons。 He felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty。 How can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? The reason is the nature of goodness。

I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty。 Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent, yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded。
